As part of our ongoing mission to keep you in the loop with practical advice and technical know-how, we’ve launched SELECT TV, an exclusive online video resource that is only available to Members

As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic sees us moving to a more digital world, SELECT has set up a Members-only video library, offering a world of information and advice films.

SELECT TV is an exclusive online initiative that delivers invaluable information on a range of topics that can only be accessed by Members.

As you’ll see from these pages, we’ve been busy over the past few months preparing to launch eight new videos that include:

  • TECHNICAL advice from our in-house team of experienced Technical Advisers

  • CONTRACT guidance from respected SELECT consultant Professor Rudi Klein

  • COMMERCIAL and PAYMENT information from industry expert Len Bunton.

We’re now planning to add to the library with short films on employment and health and safety issues as we build up a unique collection of visual aids.

Professor Klein is already busy on his next two advice videos – the ‘battle of the forms’ and contract documentation – in which he’ll use his years of experience to advise on paperwork pitfalls and the dangers that lurk when it comes to liability.

Although they may cover many topics, the videos from Len and Rudi all have one thing in common – they’re designed to be clear and concise, offering practical advice in bite-sized five-minute sessions that are easy to understand and follow.

As you’d expect, the technical videos will be longer as they go into more detail, giving viewers a step-by-step guide through a range of topical issues.

After our three-part special on EICR coding, next on the agenda for the Technical team is a range of new videos for our upcoming online Toolbox Talks in May and June, which will cover subjects including:

  • Cable sizing

  • Domestic ventilation

  • Energy efficiency, smart technology and carbon reduction

  • Proposed changes in Amendment 2 of BS 7671: 2018.

Again, all of this content will ONLY be available for Members as a benefit of membership, with the videos hosted on a secure YouTube site, hidden from public view.

Later this year, we will add the videos to the Members section of the new SELECT website, where SELECT TV will have its own dedicated web page, only accessible by Members.

We’re keen to add relevant content all the time – so please get in touch if there’s anything you like to see on the small screen.

If you would like us to cover a particular topic in our new Member videos, please email linda.rolfe@select.org.uk

EICR CODING

Developed by our Technical team in response to Member demand, this in-depth tutorial provides a thorough grounding in Electrical Inspection Condition Reports (EICRs), and use of classification codes in accordance with BS 7671:2018. Part 1 gives a history of periodic inspection, testing and reporting, while Part 2 focuses on examples of observations and applicable codes.

In Part 3, we discuss completion of the EICR, together with guidance on certification of remedial works.

DESIGN LIABILITY

What exactly is ‘design’? When do I take on responsibility for it? And what should I look out for and avoid? Professor Rudi Klein is here with all the answers to help guide you through the maze when it comes to the world of design.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING PAID

The problem of late and withheld payments is all-too-common, so Len Bunton has provided advice for Members, offering practical pointers including payment schedules, detailed applications and agreeing matters beforehand.

LOW-COST ADJUDICATIONS

In this video, Len Bunton outlines the role of low-cost adjudications and summary procedures, how they can help you, and what steps you should take to ensure you are prepared, including keeping accurate and up-to-date records.

TUNE IN TO OUR OTHER VIDEOS

In addition to these four new Member-only films, Rudi has produced a video on suspension for non-payment, details of which can be found on page 33. Len has also helped develop an exclusive SELECT Member film about the Conflict Avoidance Process, details of which can be found on page 44.
